Catching Fire

Recently, there have been two South Africans staying in Nametil. They are here drilling boreholes in the district of Mogovolas (where Nametil is), and have set up camp just outside of the school. Originally Adam and I were very confused at seeing two other white people in town, but we went to meet them, and have gotten to know them a bit. It has been a wonderful outlet for us. We can go to their camp (which is more decked out than our house) and speak English and get away from our house and sit in comfortable chairs around a campfire and have drinks. Generally speaking, it is a little oasis in our tiny little town.
But our oasis is much like the campfire we sit around. It’s temporary. Eventually, our newfound friends will finish their work in Mogovolas, pack up camp and return to Maputo, from where they are based. But until that time, Adam and I will enjoy the warmth of campfires with the South Africans, and enjoy the scent of smoke that lingers in the fabric of our clothes.
