While Mortals Sleep

October 4 is a holiday in Mozambique: Dia de Paz e Reconcilição (day of peace and reconciliation). So when I combine that with the fact that I don’t teach on Fridays, it gave me a nice four day weekend. Many volunteers had planned to have a get together on Ilha de Moçambique, and so too did I. Adam and I both had work to do in the city, so we decided we would leave on Wednesday, do our work, crash with friends on the road to Ilha, and get to the island in the morning.

Turns out there were more than a few volunteers this weekend…. We never got an exact count, but was somewhere around 35 of us. And we get a little crazy when we congregate; Sleep is scarce. Thursday night we all hung out at a beach bar till the wee hours of the morning, just catching up. There were people there I’ve not seen since January, so we all had lots to talk about. For Friday my buddy Patrick had talked to a discoteca on the island, and we invaded for a little dance party. We must have been a quite a sight on the island, all these Americans taking over the dance floor. Then bright and early the next morning, 17 of us took a boat trip out to a pristine beach for a day in the sun. It was an action packed weekend of daily adventures, reunions, new friends, good food, and little shuteye. So I return to mortality now, and will be sleeping excessive hours to make up for my weekend of attempting to tap into my immortal side.
