The past week was the official start of our winter break at
school, which meant I had a lot of free time. But it was also a happening time.
Jack, a good friend of mine and fellow Peace Corps volunteer, finished his
service. Patrick’s sister also came to visit. And somehow, we all ended up on
Ilha for a couple days.
It ended up being an ample gathering of volunteers. It was a
wonderful time, and Saturday evening we all converged (along with some expats
from throughout Nampula) on one of my favorite places in this country: the pier
on Ilha. We all grabbed a beer, and then prepared ourselves for what was
shaping up to be a fabulous sunset. We
weren’t disappointed.
I don’t have the energy to truly write out the
sentimentality of the moment, but let me just say that it was so. It epitomized
in many ways the PCV and expat culture in Nampula. Gathered at the water’s
edge, a drink in hand, conversing and just enjoying the scenario of this
magnificent country. Here’s a few that capture only a fraction of the evening.
